Stranded 
Can't create fireplace

A question regarding Stranded I. I have successfully built my hut, and want to build a fireplace. I am encountering the following problem:
* Select hammer (3)
* Right-click
* Menu appears with Hut and Fireplace
* I can't select fireplace option (does not become green)
I have some building materials in my inventory (a couple of branches, a couple of rocks).
I'm obviously not doing something right. Can anyone help?
