Unless you're buying from an online store, any high street store is going to be selling games for a high price. Right now, I could walk to my local game shop and find a copy of The Orange Box on PC for about £30, despite it being an old game and with Team Fortress 2 being available for free on the steam store anyway.

Actually, an xbox (with added peripherals and games) is cheaper, than say, buying a full gaming rig. An xbox is, what 500? Sure someone could scrounge up a gaming rig for under a thousand, but 500? Good luck.
