You can do it with some tiles that looks like "ground".

Just set the first one the darkest you can, then easy, reduce the level of darkness by each tile around the darkest one. Pleace lighter and lighter tiles around it. And the final product will look like a pit.

I didn't tested this, but tell me if it works.
