modes: functionality (control what s.o. is able to do)
titles: no functionality, just a text. like a signature for example.

I assign titles when I want to do it. When you ask me to get a title chances are good that you get a title like "idiot", "fag" or "dumbass". so please don't do it

I sometimes raise the mode of users to the super user mode when they contribute really great stuff and put a lot of effort in mods/custom stuff.

You'll never get super user mode when you do something just in order to get it.
