Did you try searching? Searching would yield you many things that others might not write.

Now understand that I'm no pro map maker, however I do have an understanding of how maps should be.

> Theme
• Decide what the theme of your map will be (e.g. futuristic, beach, fort, house, etc. etc.)
• Place objects and sprites according to theme
• Make sure everything is placed logically
> Layout
• This one really depends on what theme you picked but make sure that no matter what you pick, the layout of the map doesn't give a BIG advantage to one team
• Having a big space with nothing is not good
• Having a cramped space is not good either
• Having a moderately spaced path is alright if it's not too long. If it is, make sure there's obstacles (obstacles, walls, trees)
to balance the long path a little.
• Having spacious areas is alright as long as there's any purpose in them being spacious
> Extra details
• Try using pathfinding tool to measure if one point is a lot closer than the other (and try to balance them out)
• Use tile blending to make everything look more smooth
• You can add some entities if you want to make it more interesting but make sure it fits theme and you don't overdo it
• Give it a proper name. "de_sand","de_pro","ctf_flags" and alike do not say anything about your map and may not attract so much attention when people see it on the serverlist.

I'm sure others will give you some tips too but this is the starting points to help you out

@user quickfingers: It's actually up to you to decide. I've seen both symmetrical and non-symmetrical maps that were astoundingly well made.

You could look at user Time's maps. I personally like them a lot, especially because he uses different tilesets instead of default one. Fairly sure he makes them all and they all look awesome.

@user Time: That's why he's making this thread, doesn't he

Agreed, @user Time: 's maps are simply "perfect" so it would be the best choice to grab some ideas etc. From his works, but dont simply copy his maps. They're perfectly suited for checking out what a nice map really needs to be a success.

Especially check de_mane and de_frozen

1 - turn on your brain and imagination
2 - draw a sketch or sheme of map on paper
3 - use seamless tiles
4 - strive to make your map one of best
Ask us for advice and help, fix your mistakes, bugs and our criticism. Try to learn to listen to other players and analyze their interests in your map - because are you doing this map for yourself and for other players - so prove that it is worthy of their attention and likes.
Try to use more non-standart features and content - like sprites, lua scripts and sounds.
There are many tips and advices ... so try to think)
There are some innovative solutions that allow "lie to players feeling" - such as "diagonal tiles" in this my map.

I learned mapping by looking at others maps.
How to organise the free spaces using the tiles (floors or w/e) & how to use entities as well ..etc

@user Xirot: then keep looking, you're not even at half way. :3
I, myself and me, thinks that a map can look even greater with shadow tricks, easy to make, shadows can create cool effects for your maps, such as different heights for buildings.
