a question: where can i find shields?

im now level 4
DC has written
there are no shields in gothic. only armor. the player can use his weapon as shield (as long as it is a close combat weapon like a sword or s.th.). just press ctrl + down arrow key (? I'm not sure if this is right) while fighting in order to block the next attack of the enemey.
i always use the right mouse button to block... :p
im using the leather armor now, but where can i get better armor? EDIT: what level are you know in Gothic 2 DC?
