I would def. figure out what your current icon means, but in general my brain would connect it mainly to audio options.

A set of sliders is also a common icon for settings but yes, you're right. gears / tools / toolboxes are the most obvious choice and more often used as icon for settings. I'll consider to change it!

That would be a cool idea, if certain conditions are known through auditory means: bleeding is signified by dripping on the ground as well as a gradual decrease in vitality, a growling for a hungry stomach, a fracture as a cracking noise as you walk.
The container item concept reminds me of DayZ where wearing certain items grant you more space.

@user DC: Are players and npcs going to have physics? I mean that when they're dead, you could do anything you want with their body because they will be turning into physics objects. That would probably make it so you don't need to add death animations on each one. Not to mention it would also look a bit more reallistic.
