an engine of a game is like the "engine" of a car.
Wikipedia has written
The core functionality typically provided by a game engine includes a rendering engine (“renderer”) for 2D or 3D graphics, a physics engine or collision detection (and collision response), sound, scripting, animation, artificial intelligence, networking, streaming, memory management, threading, localization support, and a scene graph.
LOL I just love these kind of threads. So um I think you can't compare the cs games with cs2d cause they really are completely different games. Just because it has "counter strike" in its name doesn't mean its the same. Cs2d has its good and bad stuff while cs 1.6 and css have their own. Also I think there should also be a call of duty 2D... Anyone agree? I mean if DC made cs look good in 2d then maybe... Well you know what I mean
There's no embedded map editor, you need to download it make it into a .map file then compile it to bsp. 60%+ people don't know how to compile a map.
And it's hardly modifiable, no return values you only can detect when a player says something.
Dude... that's not Valve Hammer Editor 3 (for GoldSrc engine), you can compile just by pressing F9, or F10, don't remember the hotkey...
I just used to make some CS1.6 maps a while ago, but i couldn't compile any of them, since CS1.6 is poor and can't support much details without lagging...
So i got Source SDK and now i can make a giant map with tons of details, it will not lag, not crash, and compile easily.
I think many people vote for the CS2D could not open because surely play counter strike source. I have played and still play. Also if you are playing the cs source and the game will go a bit slow, download this program called Game booster and give them a more high or low speed. I could not play but I got the program and now if I can play.

Or go to Steam, right click Source in Game Library and select Properties > Set up Launch... > type in: -dxlevel 81
Click ok and apply, then start the game, close, go back to set up launch and delete the "-dxlevel 81", ok, apply, and play with a real boost on your fps.
(Mine changed from 15~25fps to 40~70).
And so, you play CS2D always but never play CSS?
Stop acting. Everyone loves Counter Strike series because of gameplay and graphics.
And be sure that if there was no CS -> No CS2D

That's quite stupid way of thinking...
I don't give a f**k if CS1.6 is the base of everything, it still sucks.
CS: Source is better due to graphics and weapon balance (which CS1.6 obviously doesn't have).
CS2D is awesome due to way more possibilities and content like Maps, Weapons, and Game Modes (which are easily customizable).
CS1.6 has what? A buggy programming language (AMX) and eye-cancer inducing graphics. Horrible gameplay, no physics doesn't need even a bit of team-work.
But i will stop talking about this because i've noticed that old school mind doesn't change...
No man, you have small knowledge of What is Engine & Graphic. Graphic is how the game look, not engine.
Stop this f**king massive quotation.
Btw, you fail, graphics are related to engine, since it's the engine which apply shadow, lighting, and even texture quality. But it manages the game programming as well.
Graphics make the game look awesome, and that's the important thing to have player, after that you look to the gameplay, which will make you decide if you're going to keep playing or not.
So stop that s**t of "graphic is not important", because it is...
