In addition, there is no Apply/Cancel buttons in the config menu...makes it impossible to leave the menu short of turning the game off.

dunno what's your problem, they are in the lower left corner.
And I made same things you told you did.
I thought of a program that copies the entire basic mod Stranded 2 in a new directory, replacing the language relevant files - so that one can both play the game in english or german afterwards.
Thanks for your efforts anyway. It should be a suitable short-term solution:

It extracts all changed data in a subfolder "_setup" under the Stranded II-Directory, then execute a file "setup_s2eng.bat", which first copies "mods/Stranded II" to "mods/Stranded II English", then delete all infs in "mods/Stranded II English/sys", then it copies "_setup/sys/" to "mods/Stranded II English/sys/", and then copies "_setup/maps" to "mods/Stranded II English/maps", deletes "_setup" and then executes s2mklnk.exe to make the shortcuts.
I have already got so entirely used to the "mods" directory with two subfolders that I did not notice.

The adventure is elongated a bit and now involves a pirate who's caribbean dialect was quite a challenge ("Arrr, ye young swashbuckler!") and an invisible boat.
