That's right folks. Epic Games are finally working on a new UT. Unreal Tournament III is now seven years old, and that one wasn't even as good as UT 2004. It's really about damn time. It appears the new UT doesn't have a name yet, they simply call it Unreal Tournament for now.

It kind of sounds like Epic goes the way of Indie Devs like Unreal Software.

• It will be 100% free
• No micro transactions
• No other F2P bullshit which you usually see in other games
• Devs are working together with the community
• Cross platform (Win, Mac, Linux)
• It will be moddable
etc.

Sounds kinda familiar, eh?

I really hope they get it right this time. Since they're working directly with the community, they will make this game like everyone wants it to be.

So many old-school shooters make a comeback now. Rise of the Triad, Shadow Warrior, Wolfenstein: TNO, Doom 4, and now Unreal Tournament... Hell I wouldn't be surprised if Quake 5 shows up as well, or Blood, and somewhere at the end of the road maybe even Half-Life 3.

Anyways, I'm excited and I hope I will get to telefrag some more noobs in the future. It will take some time until the first playable version will be released, but since it's not a one-man-project like Stranded III, I guess the development is at least a hundred times faster.

And now I wonder, what ever happened to Unreal? Y'know, the game which started it all? Unreal II wasn't even made by Epic. I'd like to see an Unreal reboot sometime in the future.

Unreal Tournament is such a epic game. I love Unreal Tournament 1999 especially since the "headshot" sounds when killing someone was such a thrill. I hope these Unreal Engine game developers will be able to produce a similar game like that but for the gamers today.

Ahahaha the puns.

Well, I've seen the livestream when they announced the game. I'm hyped but a bit scared of cheaters, skriptkiddies, hackers, under 16 year olds - a completely free game always attracts them (as you can see in cs2d)

@user ohaz: Well, if these kiddo's favorite FPS are e.g. Call of Duty and Battlefield, many of them probably won't like the fast pace of UT. Also, since UT will only be based around gameplay (that's what I hope at least) there won't be shit to unlock when you play the game, and many kids these days only play modern military shooters until they reached the max level to unlock every gun, every perk, every skin. Then they get bored and wait til the next Spunkgarggleweewee comes out. That won't happen with UT, so they might get turned off by that.

About hackers, I guess there will be voteban systems and perm bans by Admins. Sure it will be annoying, but there's not much they could do, and most anti-cheat systems ain't working for shit (I'm looking at you, PB and VAC).

voteban / permban doesn't help if you can just create a new account for free in seconds.
The best anti-cheat still is a high price for the game. Sad, but true.

@user ohaz:
If the game gets released on Steam, they could easily ban the Steam account. They could make a restriction, for example they need at least one purchased game in their library so they can play UT online. That way if the hacker gets banned and wants to create a new account, he needs to spend some money on a game. And I don't think that would be worth the cheater's time and money.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Steam itself doesn't use DRM, but allows game developers to use some kind of DRM if they want. Though in most cases at least the Steam client is required, but offline mode is enough. There are also games that doesn't even need the client.

@user ohaz: Well, Steam is a "mild" kind of DRM. And since UT is mainly an online multiplayer game instead of an offline singleplayer game, I think releasing it on Steam won't hurt anybody. Also, they are working with the community, and if the majority thinks a Steam version would be awesome, then they are going to make exactly that.

Hackers won't be any real threat, the only problem might be the aimbot if used with the semi guns such as the sniper which will be op, but "wallhacks" can easly be managed with if you are good at arena games.
Edit: Already started warming up for the game

I especially love the "M-M-M-MONSTER KILL" Sound effect

Sounds awesome, but... proffesional devs working neither for money nor for fame/challenge? Just impossible, it doesn't work this way.
Free indie games are usually created to get some experience. There are a lot of F2P FPSs around the web aimed to pump money out of kids or really angry dudes. Of course, sometimes free games are released just because it's possible, but those are usually open-sourced and don't need any budget.
Epic Games is a big company. They need money to, well, create games to make more money. Their developers don't need to create games to practice. There is no point for a well-known company to create an absolutely free game.

@user aleksix: They gain tons of money by selling their Engine. For every game that gets sold that uses the UE, Epic gets 20% of the price.
Also, a few UT mods created by the community might cost money, and Epic will get money for that too

@user WinterPwnd: Top kek, just played on Compressed as well. Although against only 3 Experienced bots. My laptop can't handle UT2004 anymore, it overheats all the time and drops from 100 FPS to 10 FPS in a matter of seconds, making it impossible to react, and too many bots cause incredible lag too.

@user aleksix: As user ohaz said, Epic makes money from UE4.

They will also make a little bit money from the marketplace.
Unreal Engine Wiki has written
We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game.

However, that's just for optional user generated content. Everything by Epic will be 100% free. So they are basically doing what Valve is doing.
