Open Broadcaster Software works very well for me and it's totally free: http://obsproject.com/
It's not only for broadcasting/streaming. You can also just record local videos like you do with Fraps.

I didn't try CamStudio. I can only tell you that Open Broadcaster Software is a very nice and free screen recording tool and totally worth a try.

Try camtasia (studio)
Im using it and it records everything on your screen doesnt matter if game or desktop (fraps only record games or smth like that) also fraps slows the fps massively. Camtasia will get you the full fps and full screenquality, also you can manually change the recordingscreen size and place it to the position where you want to record.

Who say that fraps only able to record games? You can allow fraps record the desktop by ticking "Monitor Aero Desktop(DWM)"

Mirillis Action! is good to try. Already tried the demo and it is quite impressive actually. It records everything including gaming thing. It won't slows your FPS. I have low-end laptop, not PC. Well, I got a problem with this recorder program. When loading the Action!, it freeze my laptop.

I've tried various recording softwares and it appears the functionality and such vary per software. Some capture some things some do not. In Open Broadcaster Software my graphics card doesn't show up however I can do window capture then to bypass that problem sometimes in games in others that doesn't work. But yes I'd go with user DC's choice all the way.

Try out "Movavi Screen Capture SE 4".
You can get it with a legal license for free here.
I'm working with it and I think it's very good.

@Salad Fingers

Camtasia Studio is nice because it comes with video editing software, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're playing fullscreen. It is better suited for windowed processes; though, you can always try. Otherwise I recommend the same software DC did, Open Software Broadcaster (OBS). Works like a charm, though some editors have issues with the file format if you do something goofy like .mp4 format with .mp3 audio (.mp4 uses AC3 generally).

You could also contact FRAPS directly and see if they can give you a version before the SSE2 switch.
