Hello there, users of UnrealSoftware !

I would like to introduce you with an upcoming Map Contest that will be organized by PCS Project.

Currently we are discussing the format of the rules (ex. map tiles new or already known, totally new maps or some maps already being created and tested, etc), but for now i would like to see who is interested on this idea.

We search:

- Able map makers, or experienced users, who have an idea about map editing and can be good at judging maps (Note: those who will be picked as map contest judges WONT be able to participate in the contest with their maps).

- Users interested in participating in the contest. (Rules and other stuff will be communicated as soon as possible)

You can write below if you are interested in one of the two "parts of act" in Map Contest of PCS ! We will inform and contact you about everything as soon as possible !

I'm thinking about participating but the info on the pcs website is vague. And what's with the "Best storyline" ?

You should really allow users to make/chose their own tilesets and gfx. Otherwise many will feel crippled and the submissions will all look alike making it boring/difficult to judge whichever is better.

We are only in the planning phase so far. Like Cosmo said, we're discussing the format and everyone is welcome to share their opinion on it.

If you want to suggest another category or don't agree with a category feel free to tell us in the thread:

We're also not sure whether we should try to organize judges or simply use a community vote...

Calibre is preparing two tournaments (ecc for europeans and gcc for the rest of the world).

We will probably be looking for new maps for these tournaments. However, the tournaments are being held off by a unfinished anti-cheat. So we don't know when they will start etc. That's why we don't specify whether the winners are guaranteed to be included in the mappools. However, they may well be.

I think it's likely that we will upload (at least) the winners of the mapping contest to our servers.

But:
• what is this type of map?
• to be big?

There are three categories:
- Best Competitive Map (for 5on5)
- Most Beautiful Map (for any game format)
- Community's Favorite

So depending on where you want to concentrate you can choose a maptype.

Both 'Most Beautiful Map' & 'Community's Favorite' will be chosen by a community vote, whereas 'Best Competitive Map' will be chosen by judges.

The tournament holders should decide what tiles and map size the maps are allowed to be/use.

If you don't, I could bet that someone will complain saying "Oh, if I knew about those tiles, I would have won."

In general mapping tournaments are a bad idea, you are forcing people to create maps without them having their own cool idea of one. Of course you will stimulate a few people to compete, but it will never have a lasting effect.

@user Conscience: Some people make their own tiles, you know? It's all part of the map making process. You can't take that away from a mapper.

@user Time: Name me one person here who is good enough in creating their own tiles and that is willing to take part.

By creating a tournament and giving them a little prize you are making them create a map and I could bet none of the people here even create a map with a main idea. I've seen some of those people's maps and they are bad, they look like they are random and no thought has gone into them.

On the other hand, if people with your mapping skills would to participate then a tournament would be a good idea as you would come out with some really good maps. But by taking a look at the people here participating I'm going so say it's a bad idea.

@user Conscience:
Well I can name myself. Actually, I never use default tiles and about 85% of the tiles I use are made by me (whether pixel by pixel or resized/edited textures). Making tiles is in fact quite easy and rewarding so I don't understand why more people don't try it.

There will always be good and bad entries and no one can really do anything about it. It's true that the mapping community died a long time ago but that's no reason to stop hosting contests.
