*sigh* Yes, they are lists, but there are some things you can't format properly in lists (e.g. button-like highlighting doesn't work as I wish)

highlighting works well in lists, and if you want it to look like theres no space between each item, then just set padding and margin to 0

big amounts of javascript & Co on private pages. It's not fun to wait 5mins and a dozen minimal reloads just to change a page

I don't think anyone really overuses javascript (not that i'm aware of) and a few things are implemented for the sake of enhancement, say you have a menu, and you've positioned it all perfect, now you come up with an idea to make it fixed, then Javascript is required, but the good designer also ensures that the site's basic functionality will not be unhindered by this addition of Javascript

Konqueror usually breaks them up, no idea why (and so did swift, and perhaps even safari)
I'll think about it....

Uhm... ever heard of position: fixed ? You can positioning like with absolute, but the menu floats with thr scrolling (and usually without the annoying lag I noticed with JavaScript-based menus)
But either way those menus get annoying if you're using some bigger fonts, or many items. They also often lay over the content.

and of course, position:fixed breaks on IE

I'm still waiting for the day that FireFox will become the dominant browser, its already climbing up from 0.05% 3 years ago to more then 30% (and some sources say 50, but I'm not sure) only a few more year

And the JavaScript-Solution breaks in Konqueror

I think the best way to make Firefox dominant is to stop being perfectly compatible with IE. It's hard, but you get less headache
