old planting skills "How-to

I wonder if there aren't different versions floating around, or perhaps some of the add-on "mods" might play with some of these other settings.

As I play the game, it won't let me plant grain right away, either.

But I can plant the hemp plant.

The hemp plant looks strange, sort of like a thin green spike with some leafy bits about the center. It's about person-height.

It took lots of hacking at it, but eventually I got the "light emanating from the heavens" thing and there was a single hemp leaf lying on the ground.

When I took that leaf and planted it--

(1) put it in my hand, in the rucksack view
(2) closed that view
(3) in the regular view I aimed at the ground, then pushed the "e" key.
(4) it didn't really look like anything happened--the new green hemp plant is the same color as much of the grass in the game.
(5) however, if I tried to plant a second plant, it would pop up an error (red type) message telling me that it needed more room.
(6) so I backed up a bit (or just turned around) and hit the "e" key again.
(7) when the plant grows (in a couple of game days) I then could wail on the plant again and it eventually yielded 3 of the hemp leaves.
(8) there doesn't seem to be a use for the hemp if you don't want to make endless marijuana joints. Pity, since hemp is so useful for so many things. It makes great rope, and even can be used to make hats and clothes
(9) But it will improve your planting skill until you can plant grain. (you'll know when you get the heavenly light and message "your skill improved".

I hope this helps. I struggled for quite a bit before discovering exactly how to do this. Just be patient, and continue to plant and harvest, plant again and harvest again, (rinse and repeat . . .) It appears that your planting skill will rise as you plant more things--even lots of the same thing.

This ended up being a tremendous "game enhancement" for me! After my planting skill had progressed a bit, I could plant berries, which grew into berry bushes! Now, fresh berries for breakfast every day!

I also planted some grapes I found in a "flotsam box" (floating box in the ocean, near the beach. Made a wonderful little vineyard!

I created an amazing landscape of tree-lined walks and scenic points by planting trees and bushes. Even though you can't control which kind of tree will come up from any particular branch (it's random) you can cut down and replant any trees until you get the kind you want in that spot.

This also helped me to avoid turning this island paradise into a barren piece of rock by cutting down all of the trees to build stuff. Now I can plant back new trees whenever I harvest them.

Hope this helps you through a somewhat frustrating experience!

old "How to" get flotsam from crates

For most versions of Stranded II play you will occasionally see some crates floating in the ocean, close to shore.

It took me awhile to figure out exactly how to get what was in the crates.

So if you know all about it, you can skip this. Otherwise, here is a step-by-step guide to finding cool stuff in floating crates.

To get what's in the box, first wade out (or swim--it's the same, just use the same movement keys as if you were walking)

Then hit the box with an axe. (You could probably use other tools on it--the axe does it in one shot for me.)

Then the box will disappear (sink underwater)

Don't give up! This is what is supposed to happen.

Then rotate your tools so that your hands are free (like you need to do whenever you pick up something from the ground), and take the plunge.

You will "aim" your walking down, and will soon go underwater. The effects are quite cool--if only there were more to see!

On the sea floor right under where the box sank, there will be a colored blob of some type. Pick it up.

Don't stay down too long--you can see a special "oxygen left" blue bar at the top of your screen. It will reset when you break the surface of the ocean. You might need a couple of tries to get the hang of picking up the object underwater.

To get to the surface again to breathe, just "aim" yourself upward and "walk". So in the ocean, you can "swim" by walking in the water, with the additional possibilities of walking down (to go underwater) or walking up (to get to the surface).

One last word of caution.

Just as the land has its nasties (lions, eagles, raptors, etc.) the ocean contains its own hazards.

The most obvious will be the sharks. They look like sharks underwater and can kill you with just a couple of bites.

So if you see one of these nearby, head to land unless you want to fight underwater.

If you look closely from shore, you can see just the tip of the sharks' dorsal fins circling above the waves (at first, I thought it was some sort of waterbird circling and diving for fish).

I discovered that I could kill a shark by standing on the beach (in relative safety) with an arbalest. just shoot around that circling dorsal fin. When you hit, you'll see little pools of blood in the water.

When the shark is killed, it will turn "side-up". So you will see much more of the body and it wlll (of course) stop swimming. Unless there is another nasty swimming around, you can swim (i.e., walk through the water) to the corpse and recover some meat and teeth.

The second nasty is much sneakier.

There is a single greenish/bluish (depending on the lighting) fish who will come right toward you when underwater (instead of just circling around somewhere. If you see this, head for shore immediately!

In the silly seas around this gem of an island there live piranha fish! Nevermind that piranha are typically freshwater (river) fish or that they tend to hang out in schools/groups, and especially that they will seldom, if ever, attack something much bigger than they are--until the feeding frenzy begins. . .

I found that I could kill both the sharks and the piranha with an arbalest. So far, I haven't been able to spot these guys from the beach. So I have to get into the water, underwater, with them in order to shoot at them.

It's a tricky shot if they are coming straight at you. They have a "tall and skinny" profile--much like an Angelfish--so there is an extremely small target to hit as it it moving. The nice thing is that at least the piranha kills you with lots of small bites rather than one or two big gulps (as with the shark). So if you turn and swim back to shore at the first bite, you might be able to escape the piranha. Maybe. Might.

So these flotsam crates are random events--you never know what will be in them. Grapes can be planted for the easiest wine you'll ever make (or eaten as berries for food). Eventually you will also be able to plant bananas, bushes (from leaves) and even trees (from branches).

This is a game with lots of configurable options. Basically you can (and many do) create their own games with all new objects and landscapes and plot lines.

Perhaps someone who has been playing for quite a while might have forgotten their own early frustrations with the game (or perhaps, forgotten the experienced user who gave them a helping suggestion when they got stuck!)

This is all to say that because I am also a new user, I might make mistakes in my instructions, but I also am much closer to the person I'm writing to, experience-wise. So some of the things that will seem self-evident to an experienced player might stump me for hours!

There are lots and lots of things about the game that are not "just a matter of simple logic." You just gotta learn as you go, I guess.

(just for example: just how "logical" is it that you could get teeth or claws from some dead predator, then without any modifications, use them as ammo for either a slingshot or a crossbow (arbalest) but not in a bow?
(and what about the fact that you will get fewer branches, bark and leaves from trees if you use the better cutting tool? It seems to be that if you pound on a tree with your fists, it will give up many branches. If you use an axe, however, the tree is likely to be chopped down without yielding many brances. . . or another way of putting it, "why, when you use an ax to cut down a tree, you don't get a pile of branches and leaves with the trunk?"

Maybe this would be a good thread topic on its own--"things that didn't make sense to me at first look", or "idiosyncratic bits".

This is very different from "newbie questions"

[I hate that term--it feels so condescending. And please, I am well aware that it has become a standard term across many different sites. Many people do a lot of other things I don't like--such as changing lanes in traffic without using the turn signal.]

Some of the things a new person to the game might ask are questions due to the user's inexperience with this particular game. Other things just seem to not make sense, in "real world terms."

I totally agree with you. Escpecially on the branches and tree bit. I only ever used an axe on a palm tree ;). The whole thing about explain things is correct, prehaps we all, including myself, should follow you example and explain things thoughgly.

P.S. It annoys me when you have a meal with grated carrot, as it looks like grated cheese and I get happy, then it's like... carrot? WTF!

I think this dude means that he can only plant grain faster instead of berries and trees.
