We have two groups of subjects, sciences that are taught at schools and universities: maths, physics and the likes, and languages, arts, history and the likes.

Maths and the related sciences help "build" the outer world, help us understand the basics of logic. Arts help "build" our inner world, they enlarge our mental horizons and enhance abstract thinking.

Can we say that one group of sciences is more important than the other? If yes, which group? Why?

The question comes from a certain school where music and visual arts aren't as respected as maths and chemistry, even though the school is called "high school of humanities".

How the fuck do you go about grouping art with history;

Maths, physics and chemistry are exact sciences.
History and geography are human sciences, but geography is a physical science aswell.
Philosophy is a science of problems and logic.

Art is not a science at all.

@user Alistaire: I didn't write "subjects, sciences" just for it to be there in the first paragraph.

Maths, physics, chemistry and the likes are exact. History, languages, arts and the likes are called "humanitarian" in some countries.

It's good that art helps person mentally or whatever but I believe that a group of people who learnt math/physics and other similar subjects would achieve a lot more than a group of all kinds of artist in the meaning of what they make even if that group who learns exact subjects is without some special kind of thinking towards the world.

Exact subjects are more important.

art tends to be a "dick around" class. out of hundreds of students in my high school, i only know like 2 of them who are serious (and seriously good) about art. unless you're really into art, i highly suggest not taking it. there's a pretty good chance that it won't help you at all

on the other hand, math and science classes will give you real, visible improvement if you don't "dick around"

@user omg: The same is with that "certain" school, in terms of "dicking around". I wouldn't mind if they actually let me study art, but instead they just mess the whole lesson up.

I can't agree with maths though. It depends on the teacher.

I don't know if you guys have the same system we have here or not, I hope u don't cuz it sucks imo.
In high school you choose between either Natural or Humanitarian, Natural has math physics biology and the likes, Humanitarian has History geography and advanced religious subjects/arabic.

I always liked biology and history but I cant take both, I have no problem with taking chemistry and geography too but I hate math and physics..
I was forced to choose Natural because Humanitarian has no "future".

Also there is no Art in high school only in elementary and mid school, my cousin always liked Art and design, poor guy.
In short schools here buries the art part in us.

I believe each science is there just to teach us how to live our daily lives, philosophy is more about the ancient greeks and deep thinking which takes us to the relativity theory and lots of other things, such as the meaning behind something and also about moral values and way more stuff, I got fairly high grade in philosophy in college. I've learned alot since then and yea we can all take advantage of knowledge to become better human beings above all.

Mathematics however is a great knowledge for example finding the median value, solving tough equations, or working with building a house where everything has to be pretty much accurate. Thereby it's just essential knowledge to know all of these subjects as each of them will aid you in whatever you're working on or planning to do. That's pretty much what I believe all of these are used for none the less, so I believe most of it is pretty self-explanatory.

Now, I have seen everything!

Sciences are usually applicable in more fields than the arts, though when we have answered every answerable question, inward thinking will always provide people something to talk about, debate and try ( and fail ) to understand.

You're pretty much making that up right now, are ya. Philosophy is not the base of all humanity.

He is right in a way. Ancient greeks started the western philosophy. Thales and guys. Philosophy is the mother of sciences at least in European civilisation. Other fields of science later got apart from philosophy.
