Lets see. Dogs can be used to guide blind people, help the police (chase suspects and smell where drugs are), defend houses (that's what one of my 2 dogs is for), etc.
Cats are cute and stuff, but they're useless. Only eating and sleeping.
What do cats do better than dogs, besides doing nothing?
I have 2 dogs (had 3, one died at 21st August 2011, he had 11 or 12 years) and I used to own a cat.
oxytamine has writtenBack in in a years of 1800 (1900 also), cats were catching mice. If not cats, people would starve to death, obviously. Right now they do the same job, although not needed in cities, but so much in countries.
Dogs can catch mice and bigger animals (such as cats. I remember that, before my dog died, there was like once or twice a month a dead cat in my backyard). So basically, dogs can do anything a cat can do, and they might do it better.
There may be some few advantages, but you got to admit, dogs are better if you want them to do something.
Don't take me wrong, I like cats, as I do with any other pet (I have lots of chickens at my backyard and a ringneck parrot).

Catch mouses, insects and snakes. My grandparents's cat has caught many moles that destroy the vegetables in the garden that they have, so no they are not useless...
