Not very much actually. You can unpack the APK and look at the sourcecode yourself (DEX Java code can be decompiled too!). Additionally your phone still asks you for permissions when you install an apk. As soon as you see "Can send SMS" or "Can use your phone to pay stuff" you should of course get suspicious

Apparently you have not seen the permissions "Facebook" asks for, right?
