Take Blender. I even got a copy of Blender Mobile running on my PDA. In my opinion the best freeware 3D tool you can get so far.
sure, but for most people it's to hard to use.
It also lacks most of the exporters and is optimised for linux-like systems.
Wings3d is imho good for beginners.

@Skiper: Sure: Paint, Photoshop, Amiga Draw,...
If you want it a bit easier with this wrapped stuff you can use LithUnwrap or Tattoo. Google for it, I don't have the adresses, sry.

Gimp ist okay for all that stuff.
