3d sometimes may suck, 2d sometimes may suck. and they both can rule some times. Thats depends on developers

you cannot make pixels for nostalgia in 3d nor can you make 3d models in 2d
they both pwn in a way as in 3d you can give 10x much more details in a open world but in 2d you will feel like being in a death trap in an open world
3d has much more choices but 2d is easier to make

i think no. again it depends on developers, their mind and their skills.

One question: What better: Counter-Strike 1.6 or Counter-Strike 2D?
But if your friend's 3d games are stupid, and your 2d are not, so... then 2d is better. Yes, I agree with Nemesis, "Thats depends on developers".

As Vectar said its a Z coord. If you are like ~5 grade or higher you may know how to make 3d figures with pencil.
Normal figures, like quad, can be painted in X&Y sys. Otherwise cube will use X,Y and Z.
You can notice that in map editors too for example cs2d and 1.6 editors. 2d have just X&Y, 1.6 have X,Y and Z.

There's no such thing as a "better" dimension for a game. It's just how you experience it. In my opinion, 3D games add more depth ( really!) to your gameplay, you have more freedom in walkign directions, more things to puzzle out, so therefore i think 3D games are "better'. But 2D games can be pretty fun too ( World of Goo, cs2d).
