macro123: That also may be because you may have downloaded a pirated version and not the real one, get lost. Steam - Library - Right Click your game - Properties - sth like "Game Cache/Files" - Repair installation

To expand further on this, like I replied in
the deleted duplicate of this thread: medeiros has writtenRight-click Half-Life 2 on Steam, click Properties, go to the Local files tab and Verify integrity of game files.
Leave it running and it will detect all missing or corrupted files and add/replace them.

Another obvious solution would be to reinstall the game while optionally backing up any config files you'd like.
